Much to your pleasure, God of Thunder has returned to the pregame business (and I don't mean a large group of ferrets). God of Thunder was on a tropical vacation to the fabulous Transnistria. He's finally returned though, and what has he missed? Well, a bunch of the same. Nothings new, except the coach. We're still the same old losing team. Will things change? Not unless we can trade for Kobe Bryant. Still, there's reason to be excited for tonight's game. Shaq's in town (though not playing), and Nash/Stoudemire are a couple of the most exciting players in the league. Chances of winning? Not good. Chances of a nice highlight tonight? Your forecast is Sun-ny (couldn't resist).
Backstory: It's the second game without P.J. as head coach. Though he will be missed, Scott Brooks has already drastically shaken the line-up, playing 2 small forwards, placing Nick Collison at center, and starting the same Damien Wilkins who was once buried in Carlesimo's depth chart. I like the change, at least I think I do. Really, Petro and Swift were just weighing the team down, and Brooks had the foresight to see that starting one of the true centers on this particular team may be a detriment to the team. Still, we're playing small ball without the up-tempo style. We're still using that 48 minutes of organized disorganization at the offensive end. This has been said before, but until we get better players, thats probably not going to change.
Match-Ups:
Earl Watson vs. Steve Nash
Edge: Nash
Do we really even need to waste time talking about it. Nash has two MVPs, but Earl Watson's got him beat...in Thunder Blunders!
Damien Wilkins vs. Raja Bell
Edge: Bell
Raja gets decent averages, nothing great, still Wilkins is still a new starter, and really isn't much better than a bench guy himself
Jeff Green vs. Matt Barnes
Edge: Green
Am I the only one who hates Matt Barnes? Zorgon may have a different opinion of him, given his allegiances, but everything about him just says punk to me. Regardless of how I feel about him, Jeff Green is still 10x better.
Kevin Durant vs. Amare Stoudemire
Edge: Stoudemire
This doesn't really seem fair, as KD won't really be matching up with him at any time and isn't even going to play power forward. Regardless of that, Stoudemire is the established NBA player and has averages of 22.6 points and 8.3 rebounds.
Nick Collison vs. Robin Lopez
Edge: Collison
Collison has shown some improvement as of late, and Lopez is just a rookie. No knock on Lopez though, he has defensive tenacity, but I really don't expect him to get too many minutes
Battle of the Benches
Edge: Suns
Sure-fire Hall of Famer Grant Hill off the bench?!?! Plus Brooks has resorted to, either out of necessity or personal philosophy, to only go 8 men deep.
Coaching and Intangibles
Edge: Suns
Hey, who knows, Scott Brooks could be a fantastic coach in the future, only time will tell, but as for now, Porter gets the edge.
Player to Watch: KD. Whenever you don't know who to chose, go with KD. Not to mention he was en fuego the last game against the Hornets
God of Thunder's Pick: Phoenix 98 Oklahoma City 91
