The Thunder have traded a as-of-yet unnamed 2009 first round draft pick to the Bulls for swingman Thabo Sefolosha.
To be quite honest, I thought that we'd sit on our Draft Picks rather than try to trade them for some value. But, apparently the Bulls decided it would be a good idea to trade away Sefolosha, so we seized the oppotunity. Honestly, I don't even understand why the Bulls made the moves they did. They just seemed to swap role players for role players, not really getting any better in the process.
All Chicago Bulls foolishness aside, it's hard to evaluate this trade until you know which 2009 First Round Draft Pick we gave up. Was is Denver's pick, San Antonio's pick, or our pick? If it was our pick, than Sam Presti is off of his rocker. If it was Denvers or San Antonio's pick, I'd say it was about even. Late first rounders are very often hit or miss as to whether they'll be good players or not. We could be wasting a pick that would bring about a potentially very good player, but we are also avoiding the embarassment of drafting somebody like Patrick O'Bryant by going with a sure thing in Sefolosha.
What does Thabo bring to the table? Well, hopefully a hell of a lot more than Damien Wilkins. He's basically there to provide depth behind Green and Weaver, so we don't have to deal with the prospect of potentially giving Damien Wilkins regular minutes this season. As far as the future goes, Sefolosha could be a nice role player in the future, backing up Green and Mason or something to that extent. He looks like one of those jack-of-all-trades SG/SFs, and there's not much wrong with that. I've seen him play a couple of times, and honestly, I haven't been extremely impressed or underwhelmed. Thus, it's going to have to be a wait and see game as to whether he'll be effective or not.
If you want to learn more about him, you can check out his website. Most of it is either in broken English or French, but it is navigable and has good music. On a side note, I was a bit excited because I thought I could totally speak to someone on the Thunder in German, but he speaks French, so all hopes of that are lost.
