Sonicsgate

If you guys are interested, Sonicsgate will be released tonight at midnight. And no, it's not in your select Seattle theatre near you, its worldwide at Sonicsgate.org! You can watch it from your computer!

Honestly, I'm pretty excited to see this. Why? Well, I'm a bit of a narcissist, so I'm praying that somehow a fraction of footage of me ends up in there. After all, I am the guy who showed up in the Sonics jersey to the logo unveiling!

But, aside from that, I'm just excited to see the opinions of the Seattle media and public at large, as that's not something that's expressed a lot around here, unless it's coming from Nick Collisons' Twitter, angry bloggers, or some relatives I have in Spokane, who could honestly care less about basketball, much less the SuperSonics.

Here's to an exciting premiere, and hopefully some more light shed on this event.

Expect a full review some time tomorrow.

Hey Zorgon! I remember your Sonics jersey at the Thunder unveiling. And after watching some of the video at Sonicsgate, I can tell it would take multiple sessions to get through it all. Part of it is an interesting history, but it descends into spin and spite for OKC pretty fast. I haven't watched enough to know yet, but I wonder if they give any time to the organized plot to squeeze the team ownership into financial ruin, or Slade Gorton's unclean hands that in part undid the city's defense? How often do Seattle fans wonder what would have happened if the legislature would have let the arena issue go to a public referendum? Heck, what if they had decided to deal with it at all in the 06-07 legislative session?! How many fans were packing into the Key during these years, making an undeniable case for team support? No, it's far too easy just to villify the team owners, along with the eventual recipient city. This probably doesn't end until the day Seattle gets a new Sonics team (through some miraculous turnaround in civic and corporate support) and the whole affair can distill into an on-court rivalry between Northwest division opponents. That's fine. Look at it objectively. One city passes initiative 91, barring taxpayer subsidies for sports teams. Another city passes an arena tax package by a 60% margin. Whatever you think about the motivations and priorities of these two cities, in a conflict over a team, the latter is likely to win out over the former. All Seattle did was mount angered, organized, and constant resistance on multiple fronts, and yet they'll only tell one story for years to come, a one-sided tale of a Trojan horse from OKC. Like it or not, Seattle, there is more than one side to the story. And no, not everyone in Oklahoma has a crew cut. Good grief.
I got through it....

Hello Blayne! I'm glad you visited, because it's a complete joke that I haven't included your podcast in my "Thunder Blogs" section. Problem solved, and sorry for the snubbing!

In any case, yeah, the documentary is pretty darn biased. I got through it in one sitting (well, the 2nd part failed to load properly, so I slept between parts, but I would have sat through both if given the opportunity). But, I think that it's important to get the other sides viewpoint in here. I mean, the trippiest part of the movie for me was seeing the Clay Bennett press conference where he tells everyone "we made it" and the Thunder Uniform unveiling presented in a negative light, like some sort of doomsday, whereas I had seen those moments as absolute triumph.

And, oh yes, they do get into that organized plot to squeeze the team into financial ruin, but it was presented in a very positive light as something forcing Bennett to sell the team.

And they address the lack of support for the SuperSonics by saying that Clay Bennetts ownership group was conspiring to keep fans out of the arena by keeping players away from the media, putting a horrible product on the court, and et cetera. Really? Rebuilding a team that has proven it can win 41 games in a absolute best case scenario by getting two great prospects in a extremely deep draft? That's keeping fans away? Give me a break. It's the hardest thing to believe in the film.

And yes, Clay Bennett is portrayed in a negative light, and they act like the SuperSonics are a gigantic part of the culture, yadda yadda yadda. It's pretty darn bias, and there is really no force from Oklahoma City that can do any right in the film. But I think that the bottom line is they place the blame not only on Clay Bennett, but Howard Schultz, the Mayor of Seattle, the citizens against the bill, the NBA, Stern, the nasty lawyers, and et cetera. In short, while it does present Oklahoma in a bad light, it doesn't give them the majority of the blame, and identifies all reasons for the Supersonics demise. So, in that respect, I think it's pretty fair, and that becomes more apparent as you watch the film (I assume you stopped at the Clay Bennett sideshow, probably one of the films worst moments).

In any case, I'll have more complete thoughts and analysis in the full review. Again, thanks for stopping by!
One more thing....

Glad you still remember me at the logo unveiling. I can't believe people remember that, but I guess it was a big moment in their lives. smilies/grin.gif

Thanks for the link! I look forward to your full review. Yes, the logo unveiling was memorable. It was the first time I met players, and I was interviewed for a Spanish language TV station while standing in line for merchandise. And hey, look! That guy has a Sonics jersey on! Wonder if he's from Seattle. Wonder if he's mad at us! Then there was spotting you later in Golden State gear, yet otherwise cheering Thunder. Before solving the Zorgon enigma, we were mystified. smilies/smiley.gif Keep up the good work. See you in the Ford Center!

Unbelievable Zorgon. Who is the biased one? The movie or your comments? You clearly missed the point of the film. 'Yadda yadda yadda'? Sonics 'Not a big part of Seattle's culture'? You insult yourself by that comment.

I challenge you to disprove any of the facts in Sonicsgate. They are all true. I guess you failed to mention that in your deep analysis of the film.
